Debate: Progressive Music

By CATARSIS

Date: August 12, 1982

Place: Faculty of Food Technology, Universidad de Costa Rica, Costa Rica.

Time: 1 pm.

Introduction

The progressive rock was born in Europe and the United States in the late 60s. It was triggered by diverse social and cultural manifestations of young people looking for a different status. They sought a different and autonomous identity that permitted them to excel in various fields, especially in arts.
Musicians that played rock and roll were involved in this revival spirit and enriched their music with artistic concepts sometimes inspired by western traditions and outside cultures (namely, eastern religions, classical music and folk). They were evidently unrelated to pop music.

As progressive music evolved, it gradually took advantage of technological resources both for performance and recording purposes. This genre has paved the way to experimental music and other related genres.

Catarsis has been airing progressive music since its foundation on Radio Universidad de Costa Rica, which is a non profit organization.

The Food Technology Student Association has invited Catarsis to give a lecture as part of the Student Day activities.

The purpose of the lecture is to elaborate on the concept of progressive music and its importance in today's world music.

The agenda for this day will be:

1- Presentation of Catarsis.
2- Definitions and remarks about the term progressive rock.
3- Synopsis about the birth of progressive music from rock and roll.
4- Analysis of the five main streams of progressive music (this will be illustrated with audiovisual material)

Catarsis has gathered information about the five main streams of progressive rock.

· Classical or symphonic rock (ELP, Moody Blues and Yes).
· Avant guard jazz (Return to Forever).
· Electronic rock (Tangerine Dream, Cybotron and Heldon).
· Progressive rock (King Crimson, Sinergy)
· Folk or ethnic rock (Mike Oldfield, Dead Can Dance).

5- Some worldwide progressive music will be played this day.

6- There will time for questions and concerns.

NOTICE:

Since 1974, Catarsis has been airing this music genre and other related ones. Back then it was the only radio show that broadcast prog rock bands that in time became more pop oriented.

Catarsis radio shows (on Radio Universidad de Costa Rica ) and TV program (on Channel 15) are non profit. All the music that is broadcast comes from the personal collections of its members.

Finally, Catarsis has had diverse lineups. The former members have quit the group due to work, family or personal reasons. They have been replaced by other generations that keep up with Catarsis goals: to continue playing one the top genres in modern music times.
